Borenius advised Anglo American on obtaining Strategic Project status under EU CRMA for the Sakatti mining project

We advised Anglo American on securing Strategic Project status under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) for its Sakatti mining project. The Sakatti project, fully owned by Anglo American, is a copper-nickel-platinum group metals-gold-cobalt mining project located in Sodankylä, Finland.

The designation as a Strategic Project by the EU underscores the significance of Sakatti in securing the EU’s supply of critical raw materials. This status provides several advantages during the licensing stage, including prioritisation in licensing and appeal processes, capped timelines for permit processes, and automatic fulfilment of certain derogation criteria under the biodiversity protection regime Natura 2000 and the Water Framework Directive. Additionally, the EU Commission is developing financing mechanisms specifically for Strategic Projects.

Borenius has been advising Anglo American on the development of the Sakatti project since 2014.

Anglo American is a leading global mining company focused on the responsible production of copper, premium iron ore, and crop nutrients – future-enabling products that are essential for decarbonising the global economy, improving living standards, and ensuring food security.
