Borenius advised Stadler on its successful EUR 250 million bid for VR’s commuter trains

We advised Stadler Bussnang AG in connection with the VR Group’s procurement of electric multiple-unit trains. The VR Group is a state-owned incumbent railway company in Finland.

The procurement comprises 20 commuter trains in addition to spare parts, special tools, training, and documentation related to these trains. The procurement also includes an option to purchase up to 50 additional trains and maintenance services. The value of the procurement is approximately EUR 250 million without optional acquisitions.

Stadler won the tender in terms of both quality and price. The new commuter trains will combine sustainability, Finnish design and Swiss engineering, and they will be 50% more energy-efficient than VR’s current fleet of commuter trains. The new trains will start operating on commuter routes in the spring of 2026.
